Course Overview:

This is a one day (can run into a second day) course involving a combination of theory and practical application, providing the technical skills and knowledge to effectively plan, observe and safetly enter a confined space. 


This course will provide you with the skills and knowledge, as a entrant or observer, to identify the types of confined spaces and hazards and risks associated with working in a confined space. It will also cover the atmospheric testing and equipment required to establish a planned and safe entry, as well as the correct emergency procedures in the event of a rescue.

Course Objectives & Key Learning Outcomes: 

  • Identify required legal documents covering confined space entry.
  • Provide examples of confined spaces, listed and categorised.
  • Identify the main hazards of confined spaces are identified in terms of their protential for serious harm.
  • Identify control measures to elimitate or minimise the confined space risks.
  • Conduct confined space entries (various scenarios).
  • Conduct confined space rescues (various scenarios).
  • Develop an emergency procedure plan.
  • Operate an atmospheric testing devise to determin a suitable atmosphere exists to work safely.


Upon successful completion of the course, the applicable assessed unit standards will be reported to The Skills Organisation who will register these on your NZQA Record of Achievement.  You will then receive an certificate and ID card as proof of training and competency.

A 'temporary' notice can be supplied from Safe Hire on the day of the course that can be used untill you receive the hard copies.

Course Details

Upon completion of this course, you will recieve the following NZQA Unit Standards:

  • Unit 17599 Plan a confined space entry.
  • Unit 18426 Demonstrate knowledge of hazards associated with confined spaces.
  • Unit 25510 Operate an atmospheric testing device to determine a suitable atmosphere exists to work safely.



This is a one day course commencing at 8am, composed of theory and practical.  Can run into the second day depending.
